Pictures At An ExhibitionSet of piano pieces inspired by paintings by Viktor Alexandrovich Hartman ('Promenade'; 'Gnome'; 'The Old Castle'; 'Tuileries'; 'Bydlo'; 'Ballet of the Little Chicks'; 'Two Jews, one rich, one poor'; 'Promenade'; 'Market at Limoges'; 'Catacombs'; 'With the Dead in a Dead Language'; 'Hut of Baba Yaga'; 'Great Gates of Kiev'). Length 35 minutes. Many of the pieces are very familiar, the most frequently played being the opening 'Promenade'; the lament of the 'Old Castle'; and the evil menace of 'Baba Yaga'. The great nonconformist among the Russian composer of the late nineteenth century, Mussorgsky was always in search of a new Russian national music.
