| Glenwood - the real Holly
Grove in LeGette Blythe's book "Call Down the Storm." Dan took this
photo of the house which could be seen from I 77 near Huntersville, NC
shortly before the house was demolished in the mid 70s. The book's
main character, Dr. Claiborne Cardell, was really Dr. John Edward Caldwell,
a physician grandson of the Rev. Alexander Caldwell, b.1769, to the Rev. Dr.
David & wife, Rachel Craighead (daughter of Alexander Craighead.)
David and Rachel had nine children. Mary Lynn is descended from
Rachel's and David's son, Dr. David Caldwell, a physician, b. 1777.
David was a twin to Thomas. Mary Lynn's great grandfather, who was the
son of David, was Dr. Thomas Caldwell, b. 1815, a Mecklenburg County
physician, (named after great-great grandfather David's twin brother).
Thomas's son was Mary Lynn's grandfather John McCamey Caldwell, b. 1861, who
married (1902) Mary Ella Shannon, b. 1885, and had 12 children. Mary
Lynn's father, the first of the 12, was David Franklin Caldwell, b. 1903.
Dr. John Edward Caldwell's (subject in the book) father was David Alexander
Caldwell who married Martha Bishop of Virginia. The book is now
difficult to find due to the nature of the contents. In 1977 NBC
bought the rights to the book for a 3 part, 6-hour TV series. To date
there has been no production. Only the names are changed in the
book to protect the innocent. Author LeGette Blythe
told Mary Lynn much unpublished Caldwell history before his death. Dr.
Chalmers Davidson, now deceased and a Davidson College Professor, also told
Dan and Mary Lynn much Caldwell history of a personal nature as Dr. Davidson
shared the Caldwell line. |
