course.
Assignments
There will be a mid-semester test and a final
examination. Each test will consist of 20 identification items which you
will have to answer without consulting any materials while taking the test.
I will give you a list of identifications beforehand from which I will
select the twenty for you to answer. The mid-semester test will have
one comprehensive essay for you to answer, and the final examination will
have two comprehensive essay questions. You may prepare an 8 1/2 by 11
inch sheet for each essay question to consult while you are answering it.
You will have to use standard
examination booklets for your test. You can acquire
them at the University Bookstore. I will give you the essay
questions you must answer on each test beforehand.
You will also be required to write a brief
paper on two topics of your choice. The paper should contain a thesis
statement and a bibliography. The paper should be at least 750 words,
excluding bibliography. The paper should be submitted in two forms,
emailed to me and a hard copy brought to class. The bibliography
should contain a least four items (books, journal articles, or internet
sources.) The essential purpose of the paper will be to advance and
defend a thesis or point of view. For example, you might contend that
the Japanese treatment of the Chinese was fundamental in persuading the
United States to take a hard stand again Japanese expansionism.
