What Style Is It, A Guide to American Architecture
The essential purpose of this course is to
introduce you to the principal activities associated with Cultural Resource
Management. You will be exposed to a brief history of the historic
preservation in the United States, the major architectural styles employed
in the built environment of the United States, the National Register of
Historic Places, and the operations of local governmental preservation
agencies, Historic Districts Commissions and Historic Landmarks or
Properties Commissions.
Course Assignments.
1. You must attend a meeting of a historic
preservation agency, e.g., the Charlotte Historic District Commission or the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission. Write a three
page
report outlining the major issues the agency handled, the essential purpose
of the agency, and the lessons you learned as a result of your visit.
Append an agenda of the meeting to your paper. Submit the paper by
April 19th.
2. Each student must write a sophisticated,
scholarly paper (at least ten double spaced typed pages) explaining the
contextual importance and the specific importance of an assigned property in
Davidson, N.C. Bibliographical and footnote format should be the
standard established by the UNCC Department of History. This paper is
due April 19th.
3. Take at least 30 digital photographs (jpg format
1950/1350 minimum) of your property. Burn them on a CD (CD-R only).
Provide following information for each photograph. County, Town,
Street Address, Date Photograph was taken. Specific location of
property. See 4 below.
4. Give location of your property in
Universal Transverse Mercator Coordinates (U.T.M.) Obtain latitude N-S and
longitude E-W coordinates (Google Earth) and then go to the following hyperlink.
5. Develop a separate chain of title for your
property. Submit by April 19th
6. Select a property (anywhere) of an
architectural style you see depicted in the book What Style Is It. Take
five digital pictures in accordance with format set forth above. Write
a two page description of the property highlighting those features that
contribute to its specific architectural style. Submit this by March
1st.
