1. Historians contend that the Civil
War underwent a profound change in the second half of 1862. What was
this change and why did it occur? What were its consequences? Be
specific. Describe specific events and include names and dates.
2. William Tecumseh Sherman has been
vilified and severely criticized by many students of the Civil War.
Why? Others contend that Sherman was the most innovative commander on
either side in the Civil War. What evidence would they cite to defend
this thesis? What is your evaluation of Sherman as a military
commander? Support your position with specific evidence.
