Class Time:  5:30-9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Office Hours:  Immediately After Class

Classroom attendance is most important.  Students missing more than one class, unless there are extraordinary circumstances involved, will not get a passing grade in the course.  Also, there are no excuses for late papers.  Even if you are not planning to attend class, you must e-mail your paper to me by Noon the day before it is due.  Late papers will not be accepted.

The essential purpose of this course is to allow each student to demonstrate his or her capacity to be a practicing historian by writing a research paper of no less than 20 pages, excluding endnotes.  Papers should be double-spaced with 12-point font.

It is imperative that students stay on schedule with their assignments, especially during summer session.

1. Book Reviews.  Students will have to write three book reviews.  The first review for all students will be a review of Takaki's Hiroshima.   Thereafter, students will choose books related to the topic of their paper.  Students should email a copy of their book reviews to me no later than Noon of the day before the class at which they are due.   Also, bring two hard copies of each review to class. Email them to dlmorril@uncc.edu.

2.  Annotated Bibliography.  Each student will have to prepare an annotated bibliography containing ten books and two journal articles.  The topic will be the same as that for the student's final paper.

3.  Final Paper.  Each student will submit a double-spaced type manuscript of no less than 20 pages excluding endnotes in Microsoft Word format. Also submit a synopsis of your paper of no more than 500 words, setting forth your thesis and the evidence you use to support the thesis. Students should email a copy to me no later than Noon the day before the paper is due.  Two hard copies should be brought to class.  Paper should have endnotes, not footnotes.  Papers must have a bibliography.
