Architectural History

Stephens-Lee House  (1916) Map.  This was the home of George Stephens, the developer of Myers Park.  It later became the home of William States Lee, a brilliant engineer and executive of Duke Power Company.  The architect was L. L. Hunter.  Clearly, in form and massing the house is Colonial Revival.  Note the Palladian window above the front door, the flanking sidelights, and the columned portico.
John Baxter  Alexander House  (1913)  Map.  The architect of this home is unknown.  John Baxter Alexander was one of the principal developers of this section of the Elizabeth neighborhood, one of Charlotte's first streetcar suburbs.  In terms of style the house is a hybrid.  The large gable roof and overall massing are suggestive of Colonial Revival.  However, the broad bracket eaves and window arrangement are suggestive of the Bungalow style.
Walter L. Alexander House (1915)  Map.  Walter L. Alexander lived in this house until 1919, when he moved to Blowing Rock and built the Mayview Manor Hotel.  He was the son of  W. S. Alexander, the principal developer of this portion of Elizabeth.  The next owner, W. C. Wilkinson, was president of Merchants and Farmers National Bank.  He is best remembered for the fact that Wilkinson Boulevard, built in 1926, is named for him.  Architecturally, the house closely resembles his uncle's next door.
VanLandingham Estate (1913) Map.  C. C. Hook designed this magnificent Bungalow style  house for Ralph and Susie Harwood VanLandingham; he was a cotton broker.  The British developed the Bungalow style for their Colonial administrators in India in the late 19th century.  The broad overhanging eaves, the clustering of windows, the lavish use of stone, were all designed to make folks more comfortable in hot, humid climates.  It came to the United States through California and gained great popularity.  Susie Harwood VanLandingham was a lavish entertainer.  Among her guests were Charlottean and film actor Randolph Scott.
Ratcliffe-Otterbourg House (1925)  Map. Louis G. Ratcliffe, a prominent florist, had William H. Peeps, an architect originally from England, design this Bungalow style house in the Crescent Heights neighborhood.  It has most of the typical characteristics of Bungalows -- overhanging eaves with brackets, hipped roof with clipped gable, large front porch and irregular fenestration.  The Otterbourg family purchased the home from the Ratcliffes.  Bungalows were part of the Craftsman movement, which sought to make houses more efficient and easy to maintain.
